Liege Bastogne Liege
Remco Evenepoel, from Belgium won the 2022 Liege Bastogne Liege, despite not being one of the top favourites. He attacked from 29 kilometers to go. He is the first belguim to podium since 2011. It was overshadowed by a huge crash.
The top favourite before this week was the defending champion, Tadej Pogacar. He didn’t start because of a family emergency and Wout Van Aert became the main one. Julian Alaphilippe was also a favourite.
Remco rides for the same team as Alaphilippe. After Alaphilippe crashed out he had the green light. The team’s name is Quickstep Alpha Vinyl. They have beenthe greatest team since 2013, with only Ineos/Sky coming close.
This is the first solo attack that worked since 2019. Jakob Fuglsang was the guy in 2019. The last two editions were both won in a reduced bunch sprint.
The last time a Belgium podiumed was in 2011 Philippe Gilbert won it. This time Belgiums won all three sports with Quinten Hermans and Wout van Aert on the podium.
The crash happened with 59 Kilometers to go. Julian Alaphilippe who was a favourite crashed badly. He is the reigning world champion and was senond last year. Romain Bardet tried to help him to no avail despite being from another team.
